About the game:

This game is a classic sliding puzzle, also known as a sliding block or sliding tile puzzle. It invites players to slide pieces heuristically along defined routes on a board to achieve a predetermined end configuration. The pieces may feature simple shapes, colors, patterns, segments of larger images (similar to jigsaw puzzles), numbers, or letters.

Primarily two-dimensional in design, these puzzles can sometimes involve mechanically linked or three-dimensional tokens; however, such mechanical components are generally not essential. Typically, the game comprises tokens or tiles moved on a flat surface following specific rules.

Unlike other puzzles that permit lifting pieces off the board, sliding puzzles restrict movement to lateral sliding only. This key characteristic distinguishes them from rearrangement puzzles and emphasizes strategic planning of moves within the confined two-dimensional space.

The earliest example of this type is the fifteen puzzle, devised by Noyes Chapman in 1880. Although Sam Loyd is often wrongly credited with popularizing sliding puzzles—due to a mistaken claim of his invention—the invention of the fifteen puzzle sparked a craze in the early 1880s.

Between the 1950s and 1980s, puzzles incorporating letter arrangements to form words gained popularity. Variants such as Ro-Let (a fifteen puzzle with letters), Scribe-o (4x8), and Lingo offered diverse solutions and challenges.

The fifteen puzzle has since transitioned into digital formats as a computer-based puzzle game. Many online platforms and mobile applications provide free access to these puzzles, which essentially aim to assemble an image on-screen. Once the pieces are correctly arranged, the complete picture is automatically displayed.
